Question: How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?
Answer: Many people think this is a medieval question, but actually it is still hotly debated by persons not familiar with science. It is also used today as a metaphor for “wasting time debating topics of no practical value.”
Actually, though, the answer is available through modern science. Our wonderful universe consists of time, space and matter. It is three dimensional; length, width and height. And it had a beginning and it will end some day. Of course, the Bible has taught these things all along. Heaven, of course is not made of matter, it has no beginning nor ending, and it does not have only three or four dimensions. Heaven probably operates in 12 or more dimensions, some say 21, and that is why it is so hard for us to understand. “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Corinthians 1:9
So since angels are heavenly beings, they operate in a completely different frame of reference. Since they are not matter, which, by definition, has mass (weight), and volume (takes up space) they obviously are different from us. We know that energy does not have mass nor take up space. So maybe they are pure energy. We do know they are spirit beings. So since angels do not occupy space, and are not corporeal (of a physical nature) then an infinite amount of angels could dance on the head of a pin. Since they are not matter nor do they occupy space, an angel could stand on the head of a pin or be as large as a continent.
What about us? Since we are spirit beings in a physical body (our earth suit), and when we cast off this earth suit we will be spirit beings, not bound by matter nor space. We will be as the angels. Remember, only our souls will survive this creation. Everything else will be burned up (see 2 Peter 3:10-13). Maybe there is more truth to this verse in the Psalms than we have previously realized. “Surely men of low degree are a vapor, men of high degree are a lie; if they are weighed on the scales, they are altogether lighter than vapor.” (Psalm 62:9)
