I became a Christian in 1964. Back then we only sang hymns, and upbeat choruses didn’t appear for many years. Hymns are amazing and inspiring! The Gospel message was clear and the Christian men and women of God were moved by the Holy Spirit to write words from their experiences. Those of you who remember hymns are reminded that they convey a message that is still very important for us today. The purpose of this post is to introduce some of these hymns to those of you who didn’t have them as part of your Church experience, or to remind you of their value in your personal worship. We will list the lyrics of some of the old favorites.
One example is “A Mighty Fortress is our God” written by Martin Luther. He took a barroom song and made it into a Christian hymn that is still popular today. Billy Graham used the hymn “Just as I am” in his evangelistic crusades when he called people to come forward. Here is a list of some of our favorites. We can add some of your favorites also.
A Mighty Fortress is Our God. Just as I am.
O The Deep Deep Love of Jesus. There is a Fountain. There is Power in the Blood. Here is Love Vast as the Ocean And Can It Be. Nearer My God to Thee. Be Still My Soul. Softly and Tenderly Be Thou My Vision. I Surrender All. Abide With Me. Blessed Assurance. |
It is Well With My Soul. O For A 1000 Tongues.
Fairest Lord Jesus. Down in the River. Holy Holy Holy. How Great Thou Art. Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. Come Thou Almighty King. My Jesus I Love Thee. All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name. Come Thou Fount. Deep Deep Love. Rock of Ages. |
I love the hymns. Love, love, love! It grieves me when so many churches have turned away from including some hymns in their music selections. They are robbing the younger generation of very rich theology. I must be a dinosaur!
